White Island

Private owned White Island is New Zealand's only active off-shore volcano and an absolutely stunning place to visit. And don't worry, the constant rumblings and large plume of steam do not mean that the island is about to explode.

It's a small island of 324 hectares, formed by three separate volcanic cones, all of different ages. White Island is well worth a visit, as the surrounding are so surreal you think you are walking on the moon.

The abandoned sulphur mine on White Island is a special feature. Several companies have mined for sulphur on the island since the late 1800's but not one of them were very successful. They got struck by personal or financial disaster every time. By 1930, the depression forced the final closing of the works but the remains are still there.

White Island can only be reached by boat when the sea is calm or by helicopter or floatplane. There are a different tour operators in the area to choose from who organise trips to White Island, most including a guided tour among steaming gases and bubbling mud.

We are happy to introduce you to the local White Island tour operators or if you wish, we can organise a trip on your behalf for your group of delegates to visit this wonderful place steeped in mysticism.
